Community Events

Art Therapy Buffalo is a professional network of licensed and/or credentialed art therapists who typically gather monthly to network, share ideas, and engage in art making for self-care. We are always open to having new professional members join, and occasionally open up our meetings to students, professional colleagues, and others who are interested in learning more about art therapy as a career. Contact us for more information!

Community events are important to our mission: to educate, advocate for and increase access to art therapy services in the Buffalo Niagara areas of WNY. Below, you will find information about upcoming and past events. The best way to keep up to date on our community-based activities is to follow us on social media!

Art Exhibition:

Making Room

Opening Reception: Saturday, Sept 4, 2021: 6:00-9:00pm

Art Therapists and client-artists share personal, visual responses to the concept Making Room, and all that has encompassed during such an unprecedented time in our local, national, and global history.

Art therapists rely on the power of art making to give clients a visual “voice” to better articulate their concerns, make meaning of experiences, improve coping resources, strengthen confidence, build self-esteem, and build social-communication skills. The art products created within the context of therapy can facilitate dialogue between client and therapist that can lead to a greater understanding of oneself; the sharing of this deeply personal work with the community a large, can help create community and understanding of others - that we are not alone. In addition to helping viewers understand how art therapists themselves utilize the visual arts to process their own as well as the experiences of clients, this exhibition will showcase two- and three-dimensional works created by client-artists of many ages, to illustrate the wide scope of materials and activities used in art therapy practice.

Art Exhibition:

Hope & Fear: Using Art Therapy to Cope in Times of Transition

Opening Reception: First Friday, June 2, 2017: 6:00-9:00pm

***Performance art ~8pm***

Closing Reception: Fourth Friday, July 28, 2017: 6:00-9:00pm

Art Therapists respond to the current economic-social-political climate, and how this has impacted them personally, professionally, and in how they help clients struggling with hopelessness, fear, and anxiety as it relates to recent change and transition, on a personal and collective level.

Art Therapy Buffalo is partnering with the ¡Buen Vivir! Gallery to bring together our shared missions to create an open dialogue within the community and educate the public. ¡Buen Vivir! Gallery for Contemporary Art was founded to utilize art and photography to present an historical look at movements for change, struggle and everyday life. It is designed to counter the societal amnesia from which we collectively suffer—especially with regard to the history of social and ecological movements and issues, and to inspire new generations to participate in the making of a better world. The name of the gallery, ¡Buen Vivir!, is a concept stemming from Indigenous and other cultures of the Southern Americas. ¡Buen vivir! means life in harmony between humans, communities, and the Earth–where work is not a job to make others wealthier, but for a livelihood that is sustaining, fulfilling, and in tune with the common good.
